[KIT] Things to do in Phnom Penh as a Tourist

Cambodia is one of the countries located in Southeast Asia, on the Indochina mainland. Cambodia is a country that is full of sad and memorable history which most foreigners would like to know. Phnom Penh is the capital city of Cambodia. The city is modern and surely the traffic is crazy like every other modern city. However, this city is full of sad and traditional history. We will guide you some places to visit if you come to Phnom Penh. 

  • Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda: King’s residence, it is a venue for court ceremony and a symbol of the Kingdom. Guests are reminded to wear respectfully by covering shoulders and knees. Sections that are open for publics and tourists to visit such as Silver Pagoda (also in the Palace Compound), manicured gardens, ornate temples, libraries and galleries inside the Palace grounds.

  • Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum: One of the places where Pol Pot used to keep people in as prisons and kill them if needed to. The place was previously the building of a former high school. This place is also known as the Security Prison 21 (S-21) back in the Khmer Rouge period.

  • Choeung Ek Genocide Center: One of the places where Pol Pot used to kill many Cambodian people. Almost 9,000 bodies were discovered at the mass graves of Choeung Ek. This place is commonly known as the Killing Fields. The site is now serving as a memorial featuring a Buddhist stupa filled with human skulls collected from the fields.

  • National Museum of Cambodia: Located near the Royal Palace, where you can see traditional performances at night as well as you can go and see ancient stuff there during the day time. There are more than 5,00 artefacts dating back to ancient Angkorian period.

  • Silk Island: It is about 20 kilometers away from the city. There are a few ways to get there, you can rent a boat ride on the Mekong river as well as you can rent a bicycle or motorbike to get there by yourself. Silk island is about seeing how the silk is produced and you can buy the silk directly from there.

  • Street Food tour: As a tourist you can explore in the evening around the riverside area in order to try street food. There are different types of food sold on the street, the most popular one is insects like tarantula, crickets and other insects.

  • Central Market: This market is considered as the oldest and biggest market that sells almost everything kinds of souvenirs which tourists can buy local souvenirs to take back with them.

  • Wat Phnom: The well-manicured park which marks the official centre of the capital city of Phnom Penh. The hill is noticed by its giant clock on the park under the hill. Wat Phnom has a temple that sits atop of the hill and welcomes visitors with foreigners paying a $1 fee.
