It goes without global warming is one of the most important issues facing us today. However, we live in a country where most citizens are unaware of how serious the problem is. On top of that, it only gets worse as time goes by because of the Cambodians’ behavior and attitude. Therefore, being eco-friendly is an important part of our daily life for the sake of the environment.
Thus, we should really focus on helping the environment by reducing any type of waste. Even if it is quite hard when everywhere we go is all about handling you plastic stuff, we should carry our own stuff to refuse the single-use products. Meanwhile, hundreds or thousands of people here in Kirirom live really an eco-friendly life without many single-use products or CO2 emissions through transportations.
Let us take a look at how from morning until night, students, teachers, school staff, and everyone else’s daily commute is mostly by foot which doesn’t produce Carbon Dioxide to the environment, and that is a big impact on saving the planet from getting warmer even though it seemed to be hard at first, it just becomes like any typical walk for us. When it comes to walking, we do get tired, but because of the cold weather on the mountain, we are barely sweaty, and at the same time, we are exercising every day.
Another factor to consider is that we mostly bring our own water bottles, and there are refill stations in most of the places, so that gives us a plastic-free drinking habit. I used to waste a lot of water bottles by buying them sometimes because of either not carrying a bottle, or not having any refill stations while going places, so this gives me a huge relief personally to reducing the waste of the bottles.
Another point worth noting is that we eat using the stainless steel canteen plates, and not the styrofoam plates that Cambodians mostly use in restaurants, or street food, so that helps to avoid so much plastic waste daily.
Not only that we barely make any waste, but there is also a place called Coconut School that uses the rubbish to renovate stuff back to usable things, and the Rubbish Café that gives 30% discount to people who bring their own bottles or take things as an exchange for coffee. It makes people think of the stuff that they take for granted for having the convenience of using plastic, we produce more waste to destroy the planet that is dying.
In conclusion, studying, or working here is probably the most eco-friendly way because of how minor the pollution people here make. Compared to how I used to live my whole life, I just truly feel regretful for the negative impact that I made on the Earth, and I couldn’t find any way to reduce the pollution I made because it just feels unavoidable. Therefore, this is also a unique thing about Kirirom. Through plastic-free commuting, eating, and drinking, Kirirom makes the Earth environmentally better.
