4 things I wish every website would do

There are now over 1 billion websites in the world today, and every single one of them has their twist and turns for functionality. Today, I’ll describe the pitfalls that often happen for most websites and how many standard functions frustrate users in their experiences. In this brief excerpt, I’ll take you through the properties that enhance a website experience and what you can do today to improve your companies overall site experience.

#1 What do you mean I can’t click on that?

One of the biggest frustrations that happen on a site is not knowing what you can click/tap on. Many users experience and focus on colorful buttons, text, and objects, but often they serve as a more significant distraction
than anything else. Users are attracted to color, textures, and difference when they visit your site, and if you’re like me, I want to tap on all the pretty buttons to see where it takes me. That leads me to a place of wondering if you touched this and it doesn’t take me anywhere, how else will my experience be compromised? Your website is a representation of you, so keeping it clean and functional is the way forward. I wish you would make what I can click on clearer.

#2 Why do you keep on sending me popups?

Users online have visited many sites, and there is nothing more frustrating than having constant popups come up on the screen, especially when you are browsing via mobile or tablet. If you are trying to read an article, navigate a service, or get in touch with a company, then you don’t need to be prompted 3 or more times to get a free offer or join that companies list. Having a customer service button is one thing, and an exclusive offer bar is excellent, but considering that you have all of 3-5 seconds to gain a users attention, the last thing you want them to do is to continue to click on an x to close out your pop up. The
next x they click will be your site. I wish you would stop spamming me with pop-ups.

#3 What do you do?

Have you ever landed on a website and wondered, ok what does this company do? I have, and frankly, it is a tad frustrating to
search around for a way to address what each company covers in their scope of business.
As I stated earlier, you have a few seconds to convince users that they should take the time out to browse your site, and by having them, question why they even landed on your service or offer can be the difference between a 20% bounce rate or a 98% bounce rate. The most significant thing that I wish websites would do is state their message or purpose right at the top. Make it clear if I should be here or not. Having me search around and wonder doesn’t establish confidence in your product. I wish you would tell me directly what you do.

#4 I’m lost on your website

I tend to browse a site from initial landing page through to other pages. I want to see what offers companies have and if they are consistent with their message and presentation and effort. If I see that there is a broken page or continue to navigate getting the dreaded 404 error, which is equivalent to the blue screen of death on websites, I begin to lose confidence. That tells me as a visitor that you haven’t checked your site recently and that you don’t care about your user experience. I wish as a company you would monitor this issue and fix it sooner than later.
